Sir Alec Cairncross Prize

The Scottish Economic Society awards a £1,000 prize (the Cairncross Prize) for the best paper presented at its Annual Conference by an economist who is either:

  • currently registered as a PhD student, or
  • has successfully completed a PhD within the five years prior to the date of the conference.

All authors listed on the paper must meet this eligibility—each must either be a PhD student or have completed their PhD within the past five years as of the conference date.

Please note: Eligibility for the prize requires both conference attendance and Society membership.

If you would like to be considered for the prize you will need to confirm that you (and any co-authors) meet the eligibility criteria when you submit your paper.

Prize winners are announced at the Sir Alec Cairncross Dinner.
