Frequently Asked Questions

Presenting a Paper

Q Can I submit more than one paper?

A No. Submissions are limited to one paper per person.

Q I submitted a paper but now cannot attend. Can my co-author present my paper instead?

A Yes. Just ask them to register via the website and let us know once this has been done. We can then move the paper to their record.

Q Can my co-author present the paper with me?

Yes. Co-authors may jointly present a paper, provided that all presenters are registered for the conference.

Q: English is not my first language. Will a translator be provided?

A: No. The official language of the conference is English, and all presentations and sessions will be conducted in English.

Q: Can I present remotely?

A: No. This is an in-person conference. There are no facilities for remote or recorded presentations.

Registration

I am applying for a visa but may not receive a decision before the early deadline. Can I request an extension?

A Unfortunately, we are unable to offer deadline extensions or make exceptions. Notification emails are sent in November, which provides sufficient time to complete registration and submit a visa application before the January deadline.

Is any financial support available?

No, the Society does not offer financial support. Registration fees are already heavily subsidised to keep costs as low as possible for participants.

Q Can I have a VAT receipt?

The Scottish Economic Society is a registered charity but is not registered for VAT. As a result, we are unable to issue VAT receipts.

Cancellations

We understand that unforeseen circumstances can sometimes mean you need to cancel your place at the conference. To avoid being financially disadvantaged, we strongly recommend that you arrange appropriate travel insurance to cover you in the event of cancellation, particularly closer to the conference date, when a refund from the organisers may no longer be possible.

Visa Applications

Each year, some speakers are unable to attend because their visas are not processed in time. This is often due to leaving registration and the visa application too late. We strongly encourage you to register and apply for your visa as early as possible, as earlier applications generally have a higher chance of being processed successfully.

Society Membership

Q I don’t know my membership number. How do I find it?

A You should be able to find your membership number from the receipt you obtained from Wiley when you joined. Please don’t contact the conference organisers as they don’t hold this information. If you can’t find your number please contact Caroline Alcock at Wileys: calcock@wiley.com

Q My co-author and I have had our paper accepted to the conference.  I am already a member of the society.  My co-author isn’t, though due to a scheduling conflict they will be the one to present on the day.  Do both of us need to be members of the society or is my membership valid to enable my co-author to present on my behalf?

A All presenting authors must be members of the Society so yes, your co-author will need to join. However, they can register as a non-member and we will take care of the rest.

Certificates of Attendance

Certificates of attendance will be issued within 7-10 working days after the last day of the conference.

Lost and Found

During the conference, any lost property should be turned in to the registration desk on the ground floor of the JMS building. All unclaimed items at the end of the conference will be handed over to venue security.
