President's Invited Lecture


Professor Jeff Wooldridge

Walter Adams Distinguished Faculty Fellow in Economics and University Distinguished Professor, Michigan State University

Following his PhD, Wooldridge spent five years as an assistant professor of economics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He left the institution in 1991 to join the Department of Economics faculty at Michigan State University. Upon joining the faculty, he published Introductory Econometrics: A Modern Approach, and was shortly thereafter named a Distinguished Professor.

Wooldridge was named a Fellow of the Econometric Society in 2002, and was ranked 6th worldwide among econometric theorists. In 2009, Wooldridge became the co-director of an interdisciplinary program focused on training researchers who use methods from economics to address critical policy issues in education. Shortly after, Wooldridge became the co-recipient of a federal grant to evaluate and identify "which commonly-used value-added models accurately estimate the effects of teachers, schools and instructional practices." In 2013, he co-established a summer workshop in Advanced Econometrics entitled ÊSTIMATE (Early Summer Tutorial In Modern Applied Tools of Econometrics). In 2017, Wooldridge was recognized as being amongst the world's most highly cited researchers.

Professor Jonathan Haskel

Professor of Economics, Imperial College London

Jonathan Haskel is Professor of Economics at Imperial College Business School, Imperial College London, where he has been since 2008. He has previously taught at Queen Mary, University of London; Dartmouth College, USA and New York University, USA. His research interests are productivity and growth. He has published in academic journals and written, with Stian Westlake, two non-technical books, Capitalism Without Capital: the Rise of the Intangible Economy (Princeton, 2017) and Restarting the Future: How to Fix the Intangible Economy (Princeton 2022). In addition to his academic activities, he has been an External Member of the Reporting Panel of the Competition and Markets Authority (2001-2009); a non-Executive Director of the UK Statistics Authority (2016-2022) and an External Member of the Bank of England Monetary Policy Committee (2018-2024). He was awarded a CBE for services to Economics in 2018.

Policy Keynote Address

Professor Mairi Spowage

Professor of Practice & Director of  Fraser of Allander Institute, University of Strathclyde.

Mairi's areas of expertise include economic policy, economic statistics, national accounting, public sector finances, and economic and fiscal forecasting.

Mairi leads on the Institute's work with various partners, including those in business, the public and third sector. She is regularly asked to give evidence on economic and fiscal matters at Parliamentary Committees, such as the Finance and Constitution Committee and the Economy, Jobs and Fair Work Committee. 

Mairi has been appointed to be the Budget Adviser to the Finance and Public Adminsitration Committee for 2021-2023. Mairi has also been appointed as a member of the National Statistician's Committee for Advice on Standards in Economic Statitsics (NSCASE). Mairi is also servicing on the Expert Panel for the Independent Commission for the Consistutional Future of Wales and the British Chambers of Commerce's Economic Advisory Council. 

Mairi is leading on various projects to improve economic measurement and the use of economic insights to improve policy decisions in Scotland and beyond. She also leads the programme to encourage graduates into careers in analysis through the Economic Futures programme. 

Mairi is on the Leadership team of the Centre for Inclusive Trade Policy and the Economis Statistics Centre of Excellence. 

Previously, Mairi was the Deputy Chief Executive of the Scottish Fiscal Commission and the Head of National Accounts at the Scottish Government, and has over 15 years of experience working in different areas of statistics and analysis, including transport, household surveys and performance measurement.
