"The Fort", disrupting family and domestic violence with the arts

Abstract

Voice of Change is a harm-prevention charity that uses the arts to amplify the voices and stories of victim-survivors of abuse and change the cultural attitudes that underpin family violence. Voice of Change made the movie “The Fort” to raise awareness about domestic violence and coercive control. Post the movie screening the panel will explore the prevalence of family and domestic violence and discuss the importance of a multi-disciplinary approach to support victims throughout their journey and address the root causes that underpin this issue.

Biography

Sally is the Managing Partner of Nicholes Family Lawyers and is a market leading family lawyer within Australia and internationally. Sally established Nicholes Family Lawyers in 2005, having practised exclusively in family law from 1995, and has since provided an exceptional level of service that sets her apart from her peers. Sally is an accredited Independent Children’s Lawyer, a qualified collaborative lawyer, and a Nationally Accredited Mediator. Sally holds expertise in international disputes, complex property cases, and matters affecting the LGBTIQA+ community. Sally has been internationally recognised for her instrumental role in international child abduction matters, as well as matters concerning gender dysphoria and special medical procedures affecting children. Sally is deeply involved in legislative and policy reform, through her involvement with the Australian Federal Police and Australian Centre to Counter Child Exploitation. Sally is the Deputy Chair of the World Congress on Family Law & Children’s Rights, a Fellow of the International Academy of Family Lawyers, a AFLAM member. Sally also sits on the Board of Children’s Rights International and Voice of Change.

Biography

Shaynna Blaze is an award-winning Interior Designer, Author, Creative Director, Business owner, Executive Producer, musician, song writer, performer and TV personality. Shaynna is much loved on the Australian series’ The Block and Selling Houses Australia, winner of Celebrity Apprentice Australia 2021, Blue Bottle on Masked Singer 2023 as well as five other TV series on free to air and cable networks. Shaynna is a passionate advocate for the safety of women and children, and a social justice campaigner who has leant her voice and profile to a number of organisations tackling family and domestic violence in Australia. Shaynna is Executive Producer of the film The Fort, made with her two kids and this spearheaded her founding the not-for-profit charity ‘Voice of Change Australia’ using the arts to create meaningful conversations from using survivor and victim’s stories to change the cultural attitudes that underpin family violence.

Biography

Robert A. Simon, Ph.D. is a recognized international leader in forensic psychology consulting. Based in San Diego, CA, and Maui, HI, Dr. Simon is retained by attorneys internationally to consult on custody cases and provide expert witness testimony. Dr. Simon is a sought-after speaker and lecturer, known for his ability to reveal complex concepts and issues in plain language. He is a past member of the Board of Directors of the National Council of Juvenile and Family Court Judges and of the Association of Family and Conciliation Courts. He is an International Ambassador for World Congress. He is a member of the Board of Trustees of the International Commission on Couple and Family Relations. He is the co-author of the book "Forensic Psychology Consultation in Child Custody Litigation: A Handbook for Work Product Review, Case Preparation and Expert Testimony". Dr. Simon has also published numerous articles in scholarly journals.

Biography

Jade Blakkarly is the CEO of WIRE, an Australian organisation working towards gender and economic equity. Reaching over 50 000 individuals each year WIRE has developed an approach that responds to the immediate needs of women and their families whilst also collaborating across business, government and social organisations to make effective change. Jade has been working with women and children experiencing violence for 30 years. Her training in social work and community leadership and her extensive experience has driven her desire and expertise in finding realistic solutions that support lasting change. With a deep understanding of and passion for the intersection of family violence and long term poverty, Jade designed and implemented a highly successful, Australia-first program to disrupt this pattern and is keen to continue to explore how systems and practice can better support economic equality and long term recovery for victims of family and domestic violence.
